Gordon Brown between 1999 - 2002 sold 401 tonnes of UK Taxpayers gold reserves out of its 715 tonne holdings for just £3.5 billion which a short time later would have been worth £48 billion. He also pre announced his decision so the down turn in gold could be predicted and planned for worsening the price the UK taxpayer could expect to achieve. The controversial selling off of the gold stockpile remains very controversial to this day. Mandelson was a senior figure in Blair's government at the time and would have been central to cabinet decisions.
